The Cultural Revolution in China.
Fugui and his family are involved in the "backyard steel" production from the Great Leap Forward program and are given plenty of food thanks to reportedly high stock. However, the government pushed the country's production capacity to the limits during the Great Leap Forward, leading to exhaustion and therefore an increased frequency of accidents -- Fugui's son, for example, fell asleep at school, resulting in his death after Chungsheng crashed the wall he was sleeping behind.
Later, Fengxia's parents find a suitable husband for her. During this time, the Cultural Revolution is happening, and the "cult of Mao" is in full effect. The "Little Red Book" containing Mao's ideology was distributed among the soldiers of the People's LIberation Army, despite the government's opposition. The "Red Guards," of which Fengxia's husband is a part, were also formed as part of Mao's Cultural Revolution, creating a movement among the country's youth. As a result, Fengxia's wedding is filled with Mao imagery, including paintings, music, and writing.
However, when Fengxia gives birth, complications arise, which are unable to be treated by the inexperienced student "doctors," demonstrating some of the flaws in Mao's ideology, particularly "continuous revolution."
