Chinese life during the Great Leap Forward.
During the Great Leap Forward, China underwent further industrialization, increasing production output drastically, especially steel. Villages and their inhabitants were reorganized into communes, with each member of the commune giving up his or her personal belongings to the community. In Fugui's commune, the town chief has everyone donate his or her own scrap iron to the community. The "backyard steel" program is also introduced, and Fugui and his family take part -- in fact, Fugui's entire town is dedicated to steel production.
To further improve production efficiency, the Communist government made efforts to free people's lives for labor. Children were sent to school full-time, the elderly were put into "houses of happiness," and communal eating halls were established to eliminate the need for each household to individually prepare food. Fugui's town has one such eating hall, in which Youqing caused trouble by retaliating against bullies.
